While the constitution is an essential document, on its own it is not a sufficient condition for nor a guarantee for constitutionalism. Zimbabwe is still to fully comply with its constitution and hence the glaring deficits in constitutionalism, rule of law and accountable governance.

Constitutionalism is therefore a culture of respect of the rule of law, separation of powers, promotion of democratic practice and respect of the choices of citizens, needs and aspirations. The constitution should be translated to a lived reality and that is possible if citizens’ constitutional awareness is raised and consequently they have power to hold duty bearers accountable. MPT advocates for the promotion of constitutionalism as the ultimate goal of the democratization struggle.
