Masakhaneni programs are geared towards peace building. Enhancing the promotion of good governance, democracy, gender and youth empowerment, constitutionalism and human rights protection are all building blocks towards peaceful societies focusing on conflict mediation and resolution by addressing two different but related problems; namely,
(i) lack of knowledge and awareness of constitutional rights and laws that protect citizens’ rights and safeguard democracy and human rights, and
(ii) household poverty and lack of skills as well as means of subsistence. These problems are seen from a background of general poverty and economic mismanagement and corruption on the one hand and on the other the democratic deficits and challenges of bad governance.
