Unemployment levels in the country currently are very high and the majority of the unemployed are the young people between 18 and 35 years old. Matabeleland South province is ranked as one of the poorest in the country due to generally dry climatic conditions of the region on one hand and other democratic deficits and challenges of bad governance on the other.
In tackling some of these anomalies, MPT introduced the sports for promotion of human rights and peace as a way of luring the young people in community initiatives and offer them an opportunity to engage. Working in conjunction with the communities, MPT provides school drop outs with basic survival skills in skills centers to enable them to be productive citizens in the community. In these centers the young people are given the opportunity to reflect on their lives and visualize the role they can play in advancing themselves, the community and the nation as a whole.
